Porter Square Books (Porter Square, MA) selling bookshelves

You may have heard that Porter Square Books is moving.  We've bought almost all new fixtures and so have lots of bookcases for any store (or person, actually) who'd like them.  Most of the shelves are either 7' high or 5' high, and almost all are about 4' wide.  The shorter ones are mostly on casters, the larger ones are not.  Here are two photos. Porter Square Books (Porter Square, MA) seeking Receiving Manager

Porter Square Books is hiring a full-time (35 hours/week) receiving manager for our Cambridge location.
The receiver is an integral part of store operations, physically handling thousands of books a day and getting them ready for bookstore shelves.
A strong candidate for the position will have experience with receiving and/or bookselling.

This is by far the most physically demanding job in the bookstore. The receiving manager will need to lift dozens of heavy boxes every day and relocate vast quantities of cardboard.

Other skills and abilities we’re looking for include:

  • Attention to detail (especially for processes that differ slightly for every publisher)

  • Self-directed approach to tasks (there will be management and support, but most of the work will be done independently)

  • Efficiency (this is a high-volume business in a relatively small space)

  • An interest in books (since you’ll be getting to know them one at a time.

A typical workday might include:

  • Unloading and staging cartons of books from UPS, FedEx, USPS, and occasional freight deliveries (50-80 packages in a typical day)

  • Receiving books, verifying shipments against packing lists and invoices

  • Resolving shipping discrepancies, damages, and other oddities

  • Contacting publishers or shippers to investigate missing packages

  • Preparing tasks for assistant receiver

  • Breaking down and recycling cardboard boxes

  • Moving outgoing shipments to loading dock

The starting rate for the receiving manager position is $18-$20 per hour. After an introductory period, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to convert to a salaried role.

Benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, sick and vacation time, as well as a path to store ownership through Porter Square Books’ unique governance structure. If you are interested, please fill out the application.
